In addition to the basic question of whether you prefer physical or digital versions of the manga, there is another: Where can you read manga in German as a German anime fan? And if not, what are the options? Here I would like to offer this listing.

Digital (legal) Manga providers in German hardly exist

In terms of price, there are seldom major differences; the price of the eBook is often the same as that of a physical edition. For Amazon's Kindle, the price - depending on the manga - is listed at € 4.99. Depending on the publisher, there is also no digital version of the licensed manga. The biggest disadvantage here is that you can only purchase those editions that are also available in stores: individual chapters or other arrangements are not possible here. It is not even possible to offer the eBooks before the regular release.

You will also look in vain for apps that offer legally translated German manga. Ultimately, there are only reading samples on the publisher's website to get an impression of the titles.

Detective Conan with Izneo and POP Comic is the exception in Germany

An exception here is Egmont Manga with the crime hit Detective Conan. Since April 2018, the publisher has been offering the detective Conan WEEKLY , where you can read the manga fresh every Monday for 0.99 cents per chapter (if the manga is not in the break) - in German.

Izneo, a global comic book provider from France, also offers manga in addition to comics. In addition to apps for iOS and Android, this also offers a program for the Nintendo Switch. In terms of price, the digital offers are sometimes 50% or more cheaper than the physical version. However, there is only the program of the well-known publishers - there is no in-house licensing or even Simulpub here. The POP Comics app has been added. The app has been offering German editions of the publisher Tokyopop since 2020, but the app was correctly and "newly" announced in April 2020. In addition to a coin system (which I will explain later), the app always offers the first chapter for free.

Why could it be that there are no digital offers for manga?

Well, on the one hand, of course, the demand would be lower than for the physical issue. Many manga fans swear by extras such as Tokyopop's "I Love Shojo" cards. Because: Like anime, manga is partly a pure collecting hobby. For many fans, digital manga lacks “the haptic” - they want to touch it with their hand, smell it, etc.

The second reason is the fact that app maintenance requires greater care and staff. Manga and (above all) light novels are niche in Germany, despite their popularity. In the cost / benefit factor, this additional effort is simply a waste of money for many publishers due to the low demand. Therefore, apart from Tokyopop, there is no publisher that offers an app. And offering a large app together with several publishers is also difficult, as an agreement must first be reached on licenses and the maintenance of the app.

The third most obvious reason is of course the license costs. Contracts that drive up the price must also be concluded for digital manga. These costs are not put into perspective when the fans use it.

Read manga legally in English - but where?

The topic looks completely different if you include the world language English. Although there are many illegal providers who either steal official translations in English or offer pure fan translations, the range of legal reading opportunities in English is immense. Many providers have apps, including those for smartphones or tablets. The program also varies in price, so in addition to monthly prices (such as the well-known anime providers) there is also the option of purchasing the books or chapters individually. The following providers are currently available.

All the providers mentioned offer the manga and light novels only in English. Many also offer a download function for each volume and chapter, which increases the convenience function.

Of course, the question now remains as to whether one should support English or German publishers. But that would be another topic that could be treated in more detail. The fact is, however, that due to the huge online offer, the German version, which can only come up with eBooks, is terribly weak and you (on purpose) overslept a bit here.

Unfortunately, it is not possible for an individual to determine which providers are recommended. Personally, I use the offer from Manga Plus, as well as BOOKWALKER (because of the light novel). I can recommend this without any problems.
